University of Montana to be included in book ‘Colleges with a Conscience’

The University of Montana will soon find itself in good company.

UM has been chosen as one of 81 universities to be included in a book called "Colleges with a Conscience: An Engaged Student’s Guide to College."

Editing responsibilities will be overseen by the Princeton Review and Campus Compact, a national nonprofit organization that promotes collaborative service projects between communities and universities.

The book will be published by Random House this coming winter, and will feature a two-page profile on UM, said Dean McGovern, executive director of Montana Campus Compact, which is based at UM.

UM will be featured for its student programs that focus on community enhancement and service, most of which are generated by UM’s Office of Civic Engagement, Campus Compact, and People In Ecological Agriculture and Society program.

Each school, which include Brown University, Middlebury College and Harvard University, was awarded the honor after the book’s selection committee sifted through staff and student surveys that showcased each school’s strong commitment to civic engagement.

"This really is going to be a compilation of model programs," said McGovern. "It’s very exciting that UM was chosen to be a part of this publication."

Aside from its successful student-community projects, such as growing vegetables for Missoula’s Food Bank and mentoring high school students in Missoula Flagship programs, UM also shows its civic commitment by how it navigates federal workstudy laws.

"The awards that are allotted from the federal government have a mandate that at least 7 percent of the money goes towards community service," McGovern said. "UM is already well over 22 percent."

"It’s great that the campus gets national recognition for the good work they have been doing, and it puts the University of Montana on the map as an example of excellence," McGovern said.

"It’s a wonderful way to be recognized," he said. "I think it’s a real tribute to UM faculty, students – and it speaks well of the Missoula community."
