Microsoft to help Michigan

Microsoft Corp. is joining with Michigan to set up a Web-based system designed to help teachers and parents meet statewide achievement standards that eventually will be required at certain grade levels.

As part of the "Partners in Learning" project, the computer software giant will give up to $4 million to the state in the next five years to set up a system of Web sites, the company and Gov. Jennifer Granholm said yesterday.

Authorities hope the first site will be up and running by early next year.

The state will use the money to work with Microsoft to set up sites, from which parents can download plans to learn what is required of children.

Other Web sites and tools will be made available to help teachers meet the math and reading requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

In May, Microsoft teamed up with Washington state for a similar project.
