NASCIO Releases "Wireless in the Workplace: A Guide for Government Enterprises"

On Wednesday the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) released Wireless in the Workplace: A Guide for Government Enterprises https://www.nascio.org/publications/index.cfm .

This publication is intended to help government enterprises make informed decisions about wireless technology. Wireless local area networks (WLANs) and Wi-Fi "hot spots" are rapidly emerging, yet many individuals and organizations fail to fully understand the security risks of this inherently open technology and expose their systems unnecessarily. Wireless in the Workplace will address this issue along with a variety of other topics associated with working in the wireless world. It highlights key issues such as:

* wireless applications and uses

* wireless technology options

* wireless standards

* wireless security

* wireless network management and performance

* wireless installation and maintenance

The publication was produced by NASCIO’s infrastructure subcommittee chaired by John Gillispie, chief operating officer of the Information Technology Enterprise, Department of Administrative Services in Iowa. "Wireless is the future of the networking environment. This guide is designed to educate state CIOs and their staffs on the implementation challenges and opportunities associated with wireless technology," said Gillispie.
