YOU’RE INVITED TO A SPECIAL EVENT
Education Town Hall Meeting

I want to give Montana educators an opportunity to communicate directly with the Under Secretary of Education,
Eugene Hickok, about the No Child Left Behind Act.

It is my goal to talk about the things we can improve upon
and discuss workable solutions that will bring Montana students the highest quality education.

Education has always been the cornerstone of our country and a knowledgeable workforce begins with the basics. Here in Montana, we have some of the best schools in the nation. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act is a bipartisan effort put forth in Congress, started under President Clinton and completed by President Bush.

This is a beginning point to ensure that our future generation receives the best education possible. As you know, our state has been a leader in the education front from kindergarten to college, even though our schools face unique challenges that come with being a rural state. Teacher recruitment, declining enrollment and geography affect how our young people are taught. Montana has done a fine job with the available resources and we must continue with that tradition.

Because of these issues, along with many more, I have invited the Undersecretary of Education, Eugene Hickok, to visit our great state. He has agreed to participate in the Education Town Hall meeting I am hosting on Friday, April 23, 2004. The event is from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Hellgate Elementary in Missoula, Montana. It will be a written question format, with the questions being read by a moderator and addressed by Undersecretary Hickok and myself. It is my intention to clarify some of the issues facing educators as well as to provide common sense solutions to challenges facing rural educators.

I am really looking forward to this event, as I hope that you are. I believe in our future and that begins with the best possible education that we, as a country, can provide. If you wish to submit questions in advance or need more information, please feel free to visit my website at http://burns.senate.gov or you may contact my office at 1-800-344-1513.
