South Dakota Regents OK centers at Tech for nanotechnology research

The state Board of Regents has approved two new centers at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City that are designed to improve the university’s growing research mission.

The action gives approval for a Center for Accelerated Applications at the Nanoscale and the Institute for Multi-Scale Materials Development and Processing.

"We are excited about these new centers and their potential to create technology-based economic development opportunities and to create new knowledge," Tech president Charles Ruch said.

Nanotechnology means research at the nanoscale which is about one-thousandth the width of a human hair. The technology could be used build products that last longer and work better.

The other center will enhance existing activities in the field of materials science.
